Enjoy Your Deer Hunt Long After Deer
Season Ends by Reliving Your Deer Hunt at the Dinner Table
by Marty Prokop
Picture yourself
sitting on your deer hunting tree stand. You breathe in the
fresh autumn air. You feel the crispness of early morning on
your face. Sitting in your tree stand you watch animals like
squirrels, grouse, snow shoe hares and the occasional eagle
flying overhead.
You hear a twig snap
off to your right. Your eyes search the woods for the source
of the noise.
“Is it a deer?”
You wonder, as your
eyes keep looking for a glint of an antler or a brown patch
of hair in the early morning light. You hear leaves
rustling, the sound getting closer.
Then, about 65 yards
into the brush, you see a deer’s leg. Just a couple more
steps, and the deer will be in plain view. Seconds seem to
last an eternity. The deer moves into the shooting lane you
cleared in front of your deer hunting tree stand last
summer.
It is a nice buck.
You raise your rifle. Steady your aim and squeeze the
trigger.
Minutes later you are
standing over your trophy. You give thanks.
After field dressing
your deer, you drag it back to camp and hang it on the camp
meat pole to cool.
The next morning you
pack your gear into your truck and head home. Your thoughts
turn to all the great venison feasts you will enjoy with
your family.
One of the best ways
to relive your deer hunt is to prepare a meal from the deer
you harvested. With each bite of tasty venison you can
re-experience the day you harvested your deer.

Recipe from Marty Prokop
When I was growing
up, my family would process deer, beef, pork and chicken —
often in large numbers. Many times we could get extra
helping hands if we promised they could eat as much of Mom’s
chili as their stomachs could hold.
Mom would make a big
batch of chili to feed the crew. Here is her chili recipe.
